Administrative Assistant
African American Cultural Center
Hourly | Full-Time | Exempt | Flexible Hours
Rate: $23-$25/hr
Start Date: March/April 2026
Posting Period: January 2 – February 2, 2026

 

Position Summary

The Administrative Assistant plays a central role in the daily operations of the African American Cultural Center. Serving as a primary point of contact for the public, this position supports front desk operations, internal and external communications, and administrative functions across the organization.

 

The Administrative Assistant provides direct administrative support to the Executive Director and assists the Deputy Director with program-related logistics for dance, theater, education, and board activities. This role requires strong organizational skills, cultural competence, and the ability to balance public-facing responsibilities with behind-the-scenes administrative work in a fast-paced, community-centered environment. The position operates in a hybrid work structure, with a regular on-site presence required. Hours are flexible and may include evenings and weekends.

 

Primary Responsibilities

Front Desk Support

  • Answer incoming phone calls

  • Greet guests, artists, and partners upon arrival and respond to general questions

  • Serve as a welcoming, informed point of contact for the public

 

General Correspondence

  • Handle general internal and external correspondence

  • Monitor and respond to the Center’s general email account

  • Draft clear, professional written communications as needed

 

Administrative Support for the Executive Director

  • Provide direct administrative support to the Executive Director, including:

    • Drafting and responding to internal and external correspondence including postal mail, emails, and phone calls

    • Organizing and maintaining digital and hard copy files for the Executive Director

    • Supporting day-to-day administrative needs

    • Performing other duties as assigned

 

Administrative Support for the Deputy Director

  • Assist the Deputy Director with administrative duties related to Center programs, including but not limited to dance, theater, education, and board support

  • Coordinate program-related logistics, including:

    • Ordering and inventorying supplies and costumes

    • Distributing contracts and related documentation

    • Supporting auditions and program intake activities

    • Scheduling rehearsals and program-related meetings

Required Skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Proficiency with Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Drive)

  • Ability to exercise discretion when handling confidential information

  • Reliable, self-directed, and able to work in a hybrid environment

  • Demonstrated cultural competence and the ability to engage respectfully across differences in race, ethnicity, age, economic circumstance, and lived experience
